What PerplexityBot does
PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity's search results. Perplexity says it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.
What Perplexity states:
- To appear in search results, Perplexity recommends allowing
PerplexityBotin robots.txt and accepting requests from its published IP ranges. - Each robots.txt setting works independently, and changes can take up to 24 hours to take effect.
- For web application firewalls such as Cloudflare or AWS WAF, Perplexity advises allowing requests that match both the user agent and the official IP ranges, and automating updates to those ranges.
The full user-agent string is published (PerplexityBot/1.0). Its IP ranges live in a dedicated JSON file, separate from the Perplexity-User list. No reverse DNS verification is documented.
Perplexity keeps this indexing crawler apart from Perplexity-User, which visits pages on behalf of users and generally ignores robots.txt. Blocking PerplexityBot therefore does not stop every Perplexity request, but it is the bot that determines whether your site shows up in Perplexity's results.
Block or allow PerplexityBot
Your site may stop appearing and being linked in Perplexity's results. Visits from Perplexity-User, which are triggered by users, are not covered by this rule.
To block it, add this to your robots.txt:
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Disallow: /To allow it explicitly (copy any private rules you have):
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /A group naming PerplexityBot replaces the User-agent: * group for it. Build a complete robots.txt with the generator and check it with the tester.
Verify a PerplexityBot visit
Anyone can write “PerplexityBot” in a User-Agent. Paste the IP address and User-Agent from your logs into the IP verifier to know whether the visit is genuine.
